Forgot to mention, we just tried netx rather than Java Web Start 
(http://www.acm.vt.edu/~jmaxwell/netx/compare.html) which seems a bit 
easier to use and comes in source code format so it is easy to tweak. ( we 
just added a url authenticator ) it does not need signed jar's.
