re: preserve space

when cutting over to jdom i had to nuke our pre-existing
xml:space="preserve" attributes. i was ok doing this as
it appeared that embedded spaces were preserved yet
pre and post content white-space were trimmed ... which
is ok in my env.

is there an intended api whereby content white-space is
preserved? i surely hope so.

i'll pull down the latest and peruse it time permitting.
